US: Houston Restores Pride Banners on Westheimer

In October 2026, Houston Mayor John Whitmire, Council Member Abbie Kamin, and local community advocates gathered in the historic Montrose neighborhood to announce the installation of Progress Pride banners along Westheimer.

The civic initiative restores a vital visual symbol to the center of Houston's historic queer community following the earlier paving over of the local rainbow crosswalk.

Montrose has long served as Houston's foundational cultural hub and safe haven for LGBTQ+ residents. When municipal street resurfacing previously covered the neighborhood's landmark rainbow crosswalk, community members mobilized through peaceful demonstrations, sit-ins, sidewalk art, and documentation projects.

Alongside grassroots creative responses, eighteen civic and advocacy organizations issued a unified statement urging municipal leadership to respect and preserve the district's queer heritage.

Following this community outcry, Equality Texas, the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, the Montrose Center, and the Mayor's LGBTQ+ Advisory Board formally presented policy proposals to City Hall, including reviving the Westheimer banner district.

Council Member Abbie Kamin and long-time activist Jack Valinski championed the measure in partnership with Pride Houston 365, while Mayor Whitmire personally provided the funding to produce and install the banners.

The return of the banners highlights the constructive power of collective advocacy uniting grassroots organizers, cultural workers, and elected representatives.

By reclaiming public streetscapes with symbols of diversity and intersex inclusion, the project provides meaningful civic reassurance to sexual and gender minorities while modeling effective community-government collaboration in urban preservation.
