Germany: Judoka Banned for Life After Attacking Openly Gay Opponent

In October 2026, a severe act of violence occurred following a German Judo-Bundesliga bout in Leipzig, Germany. Georgian judoka Akaki Japaridze attacked his opponent, German Olympian Timo Cavelius, striking him multiple times and causing a serious jaw injury requiring surgical intervention. Following the assault, the German Judo-Bundesliga issued a lifetime ban against Japaridze from competing in the league.
Timo Cavelius is an accomplished German judoka who made history at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games as an openly gay male competitor, establishing high visibility within the sporting world and the LGBTQ+ community. Following the incident, Japaridze alleged that Cavelius' victory celebration was disrespectful and provocative. Cavelius firmly rejected the accusation, clarifying that his celebration was directed toward his own squad and denying any insult toward his opponent.
According to the German Judo Federation, the severe injury has forced Cavelius to withdraw from major upcoming events, including the World Championships. In addition to the domestic lifetime ban, Japaridze faces disciplinary proceedings from the Georgian Judo Federation and the International Judo Federation, while German law enforcement conducts a formal criminal investigation.
The physical attack has drawn sharp condemnation from sports bodies and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups globally. Observers emphasize that such actions directly contradict core sporting principles, urging international athletic federations to strengthen safety measures and strictly enforce anti-violence standards to protect competitors.
