In September 2026, the community group Queer Rise South Sudan launched a public advocacy campaign from South Sudan. Young LGBTQ+ and transgender gathered to display rainbow and trans pride flags, calling on the global community to secure basic necessities including food and clean water, while advocating for the right to live safely and with dignity.

The initiative represents queer seeking asylum in South Sudan, including those residing at sites such as the Gorom  Camp. Having fled persecution and violence targeting sexual and gender minorities in their home countries, these individuals continue to face severe hardship, lack of vital supplies, and social isolation within displacement settings.

In their public statement, organizers emphasized that visibility signifies hope, expressing their shared resolve to stand together and support one another despite precarious conditions. Beyond appealing for immediate life-saving aid, the message underscores the fundamental right of queer to exist openly and without fear regardless of location.

This public appeal heightens international awareness regarding the specific humanitarian vulnerabilities faced by displaced LGBTQ+ individuals in East Africa. By urging mutual aid and information sharing, the campaign mobilizes global human rights agencies, relief organizations, and advocacy networks toward building safer, more inclusive protection frameworks for displaced queer populations.
